still too young

Matt Smith: the 11th Doctor

January 8th, 2009

Several days ago, the announcement was made that Matt Smith is the 11th Doctor.  I don’t know if you know, because you sure as hell should know, that I am a huge Doctor Who fan.  Nerd.  Geek.  Fangirl.  Whatever, you know?  And honestly, I was not appalled by this idea like so many other people were/are.  There are three main reasons why people do not like him:

  1. He is too young.
  2. He is white.
  3. He lacks in eyebrows.

To all who dislike Matt Smith already for at least one of those reasons: GROW THE FUCK UP.  Seriously.

Sure, he is 26 years old.  For some people that is not mature enough. But look at little Dakota Fanning, a 14 year old actress. Isn’t she mature?  So, then, why is Matt Smith not mature?  Is it because his resume is not long enough?  Is it because he’s someone nobody knows?  Is it because he’s younger than you?  His youth will bring something different to the Doctor Who scene, and chances are that that certain something will be a good something.

Do you not like him because he’s white?  I’m not calling you racist, but I’m calling you lame.  Sure, Paterson Joseph was the front-runner.  But come on, calm down.  You don’t know what went on behind the scenes, do you?  What if Paterson Joseph was an asshole and declined the offer?  What if he didn’t even audition?  What if he wasn’t even approached by the big guys about being the next Doctor?  It’s not a matter of the executives being racist.  It’s a matter of who feels right in the Tardis, and as much as I’d love seeing Paterson Joseph being the next Doctor, Matt Smith has that really awkward distant look to him that makes him look like a Time Lord.

Is it the lack of his eyebrows that bother you?  I’ll admit that it bothers me too.  I am a member of this community.  Matt Smith has the potential to be such a heartthrob among girls everywhere, but with his un-hairy eyebrow line he’s kind of blowing that opportunity.  Or so we think.  We have yet to see him be The Doctor.  If he has the wit, the charm, the clever sexiness that all previous regenerations had, he’s going to be that heartthrob, and perhaps start a trend.  No, seriously.  You heard it here first.

All we have to do is wait.  We have to give him a chance.  We have to find out who his companion is.  We need more photoshoot pictures of him.  Then we won’t have to see this before getting to his Wikipedia entry.

Unfortunately, I can’t find any high quality images of him to spam this post with.  But stick with me, my friends, and when I do find them, I promise I’ll post them.  Until then, have a nice, sexy picture of Ben Barnes:

Now, this has me wondering…why didn’t they choose Ben Barnes to be The Doctor?  Tee hee.

you forgot to mention that some people hate him because he’s straight up fucking ugly.

    ben barnes ftw.

  2. Hena

STFU. He still has time to get plastic surgery. Next season doesn’t start until 2010.

  3. tracy poynter

totally agree with josh? WHY ARE MORE PEOPLE NOT BEING BLUNT!!!! matt smith is butt ugly and is going to ruin all that tennant has achieved….
hey i hear russell brand is going cheap LOL
NO AMOUNT OF PLASTIC SURGERY CUD SORT HIM OUT BY THE WAY X

I think my only issue on Matt Smith becoming the 11th doctor is that I hate his emo hair-do in the promotional pictures. I don’t think it fits his face.

I think Matt is horrible to look at a short glance, he’s not easy on the eyes at all, but once you have seen him in an episode as The Doctor I think people’s opinions will change with reaction as “he’s bloody brilliant” welldone Steven Moffat for casting such a great actor, he’s my fifth favourite! the best Doctor ever!! will from the words of the critics.

anyway Doctor Who was never about style and looks but the qualities of the actor’s talents bring the show to life, I mean Chris Eccleston didn’t have any looks did he? yet people liked him, neither does David Tennant but people like him also. the qualities are yet unseen of the 11th Doctor which is unfair to judge right now.

I think if the show is a disaster they will need to cast someone else, at first I thought that is a bad decision, Moffat must have scrapped the barrell when he cast Matt an Unknown at the age of 26 still wet behind the ears to take on something as major as Doctor Who could only bring disaster to the show.

the fear is that the show may get cancelled if things get bad, yet people like RTD’s terrible writing and it’s still a success.

I do think he’s too young, more of experience than actual age. I’ve seen him in a few things in which he’s never really caught my attention, and I think for the role as big as the Doctor…you need to have that sort of presence, that even if you are a side character people are taking note of it. David Tennant is a very good example of this, Christopher, and Tom Baker as well. Considering who he has to follow, I don’t think many people are going to enjoy him. They’ll be expecting someone up to par or better than David I strongly doubt he’s going to be able to do that.
-and not to mention his looks ain’t gonna get him much love from the fangirls.

    Dear Ben Barnes,
I saw you to kiss name is Susan from Narnia: Prince Caspian and Susan and you to ride horse together.

Matt Smith….. awww, c’mon….. he was cast because he is CHEAP!….. He’s a nob! Did you see him in that cop show on BBC2 a month or so ago – he was bloomin’ awful! He can’t act if his life depended on it – just dreadful in so many ways! Read his CV – he is an actor only because he is a failed footballer and didn’t want to have to get a proper job instead….. What a disaster for Doctor Who! ….And the BBC know it….. and they are in a panic about the number of people who have declared they won’t watch after David Tennant leaves. The truly cynical evidence for this is their attempt to get Tom Baker back to cameo in one or more of Smith’s episodes……’nuff said!

  9. Moomin

He’s some teen bopper emo ponce that looks like he walked out of the set of Twilight onto Doctor Who, he’s far too young to be a 900 odd-old timelord with a stupid haircut and mismatched typical ‘indie’ clothes.

He’s going to destroy the series just because they’re trying to appeal to the squealing, retarded 13-16 fanbase.

  10. Rob

In my opinion as long as Matt Smith can act his way out of a paper bag, and there is a lot of evidence that this is true, the show will be fine. Steven Moffat has written almost all of the best episodes of the new series. I think it is going to be a excellent season. I am really excited to see the new season even though I am sad to see David go.

The only reason I think there is the under current of dislike for Matt is because we all love David so much, and it is hard to think there will be another good Doctor.

  11. Hubert

um… we shall see. so far so bad however.

  12. vane

Ele é muito lindo,não só pela beleza, mas pelo seu talento de “cineasta” e seu carisma!!

  13. Betsy

I think that alot of peole are sad that tenants leaving and taking it out on matt smith like ” no one will ever be as good as David tennant” which isn’t nessicaraly true but everyone will miss him

  14. Peggy

Oh he’s gorgeous. He’s had some facial enhancements. If I could have his bone structure, and sexy looks wiht a tad of surgery I would gladly do it. Anyone calling him ugly needs an optometrist, or attitude adjustment.

  15. Davros

what a disaser you should get an actor like Tom baker or someone with personality like colin baker but not a wanna be footballer

  16. Luke

Hmmm.. can you say Doctor reTARDIS?

  17. Charlotte

I am so, so, sorry. I’m going to sound so rude, and I know that it shouldn’t be based on looks, but I just CAN’T look at him without cringing. I mean, he’s ok for some sketch show or something, but Doctor Who? This guy’d better be good, or I won’t be watching until it changes again.

  18. Katherine

Well, personally I think he’s gonna do a great job as Doctor Who. Sure, some people think he’s not exactly heading up Gorgeous Avenue, but you can’t underestimate his talent just because he has no eyebrows. I mean, Ben Barnes has a buttchin (duh!!) and no-one cares about that, but EYEBROWS??? Come on. Personally I think he’s an alright looking guy. He will do a brilliant job as The Doctor. Just you wait and see.

  19. Pharap

I’ll admit im sceptical about how good an actor he’ll be. But I’m all for giving him a chance. I just wish he looked a bit less gothic. He needs to change his choice of clothing and mostly his haircut. Preferably something a bit more symetrical, like ozzy osborne, or maybe have it gelled back, or just stuck up. Anything but that one sided parting.

And not meaning to be racist but a black doctor is a no-no. It would cause the show to loose its feel. Another time lord ok, but not the doctor. It would make more sence if he regenerated into joanna lumly than bob marley.

Lastly: ALAN DAVIES FOR 12TH DOCTOR, WHO’S WITH ME?
(ifyou dont know who he is, check out jonathan creek, its usually on watch quite late)

  20. Ed

I’m sure their exists a black man who would be perfect as a doctor. Perhaps they’ve had a hard time finding anyone willing to follow in Tennants shoes… For a lot of people he encompasses the Dr Who character, so for a 26 (oooooh sorry he’s 27 now) year old hap-hazard to come along and take over the role can certainly seem like a step back.
He is lacking on the eyebrow front and he really does seem too young.

Alan Davies? Would be great! Heck so would Caroline Quentin but only due to the fact that their wisdom and experience is somewhat believable….

It seems as if someone at the BBC has decided that Dr Who could be really cool. And what a shame, because that’s precisely what will ruin it. I’m 24 but get the impression that the target audience will suddenly fall below me when the 11th Dr takes over.

Oh well. Russel T. will make something else worth watching, and I can always go and buy the 3rd and 4th seasons on dvd when they fill boxes at a New Year sale, but I’m still in a huff because my favourite show has just turned bad. The last episode was like the new Sherlock Holmes: Supposedly something to do with that great old character you used to know, but stripped of everything that made you like him.

    Yawn.
Matt, I hope you know what you’ve signed up for.
    The End

  21. BlauPanda

Matt is not ugly… he’s FUGLY!! And i’m NOT saying that ’cause i’m ’sad’ David Tennant left – i’m more sad katherine tate didn’t get more seasons as a companion; she was awsome! This Matt Smith’s acting, at least what i saw of it on that last DW and the previews that followed… well, i just didn’t believe his delivery… did u guyz see that regeneration scene? Was that a first take? Terrible acting that was completely stiff and unatural, and makes me doubt very much that this person is fit for this particular role. IS this an attempt, like someone mentioned above, to cater to the twinks who are obsessesed with all this twilight crap? I think so…

  22. Bob132

The Doctor Who actor has to be Charismatic, which is not the same as being ‘Cute’ or good looking. Charismatic means that you have a certain magnetism, a screen presence, that makes people look. It is not about looking like the latest Hollywood ideal. I think the casting director is doing a very good job of sticking to this principle and not just casting someone who looksa like every other Hollywood face.
